The whole project to renovate the beautiful building of Christ Church started in 1999 and, now, after nearly 20 years and 3 phases later, it's complete! Our thanks toHeritage Lottery and Historic Scotland for supporting this work, not to mention fundraising from the congregation.
We have detailed below the work that went into each phase along with photographs showing the project in progress. You can download the whole project in one document at bottom of this page.
Phase 1 Phase 1 started in 1999 with the east end of the building - often considered the most sacred part of the church. Some of the stonework in this area had decayed, including around many of the stained glass windows, and a large section of the roof needed reslating to ensure that the church building be protected from the harsh Scottish weather!
Phase 2 Phase 2, started towards the end of 2002, focused on the tower and spire. The tower is one of the tallest in Edinburgh, with wonderful vistas of the city. The stonework was so decayed as to be dangerous, with several sections ready to fall. During this phase there were also stonework repairs to the North and South transepts - these are the two arms forming the cross of the church.
Phase 3 The final phase has completed the scheduled work, enabling generations to come to enjoy the beauty of the building, whether during services or simply as a visitor to this historic site. Having renovated the stonework in the East and the Centre of the building, Phase 3 completed the work needed for the West end. It also includes a redesign of the hall, enabling greater accessibility for all members, visitors and community groups using the church.
