Since its earliest days Christ Church has enjoyed a varied and accomplished musical life.

Each Sunday at the 10am Sung Eucharist, as well as the hymns, we sing a psalm either to Anglican chant or in a more modern version, a Taiz
é chant, seasonal congregational settings of the Eucharist and occasional choral settings. The choir (and sometimes our Children's Choir) performs an anthem during communion.

Choral Evensong is held at 4pm on the second Sunday of the month, September-June.

Choir
We have a full SATB choir with around 15 members and we always welcome new singers. If you would like to join the choir, please contact Ross Gubby, our Director of Music.
The choir rehearses on Thursdays 7.30-9.00pm, with a practice from 9.15am each Sunday morning before the 10am Eucharist. We sing a wide range of music ranging from Byrd to Rutter, both accompanied and unaccompanied.

Children's Choir
Our Children's Choir began in the second half of 2023 and is directed by our Assistant Organist, Kat Whigham. The Children's Choir is open to anyone of school age, and meets at 11:45am after church and coffee on Sundays during term-time. The Children's Choir sings at special Sunday services throughout the year, as well as just signing for the fun of making music. If you think your child would enjoy learning to sing in a church setting, please email Ross.

Pipe Organ
Originally built by Peter Conacher of Leeds in 1878 shortly after the church was completed, the organ is a two manual pipe organ with electric action. It has been overhauled several times in its history, most recently in 1993. The specification can be found here.

Music Leadership Team

Ross Gubby, Director of Music [email protected]

Ross has been involved with sacred music since the age of six, when he began taking piano and singing lessons. He first played the organ in 2012 and, three years later, gave a solo recital during the Fringe. Ross gained a BA (Hons) Music from the University of York, during which time he chaired the University Brass Band and also studied Baroque viola performance. Ross has a great love for Anglican music in particular, and enjoys directing concerts which bring instrumentalists and singers together.

Kat Whigham, Assistant Organist.
[email protected]

Kat has been involved in music from a young age, starting with the brass band culture of the Scottish Borders, and playing any instrument available. After taking up the organ at 16, it became clear this was meant to be. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a BMus (hons), Kat joined the choir at Christ Church and became Assistant Organist.
