The Reverend Canon Matthew Rushton
Rector (email)
Matthew has been Rector of Christ Church since March 2023.

Matthew studied music at Oxford University and law at Nottingham Law School.  Before ordination he was a solicitor.

Trained for ordination at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Matthew was ordained in 2009 and served his curacy in a group of rural parishes in Lincolnshire – he was also a priest-vicar at Lincoln Cathedral. He served as Archbishop’s Chaplain in Canterbury and Chaplain to the Bishop of Dover, and then as Precentor and Minor Canon of Canterbury Cathedral. From 2017 to 2023, he was Canon Precentor of Rochester Cathedral (and is now Canon Emeritus).

Matthew is married to Elizabeth (Professor of Education at Stirling University) and they have two adult sons.  He enjoys music, watching cricket, and exploring Scotland and Northumberland with Rosie the spaniel.
The Reverend Ryan Bennett
Associate Rector (email)
Ryan was born and grew up in Bendigo, Central Victoria, Australia. His family live on the Surf Coast, west of Melbourne.

Ryan undertook a double BA/BTh degree programme at Monash University and Trinity College, Melbourne. Ordained in 2008, Ryan served in both the Ballarat and Melbourne Dioceses, before becoming the Bishop's Chaplain at Christ Church Cathedral, Ballarat. Ryan was then Parish Priest of Springmount in the Goldfield region of Central Victoria.

In January 2019, Ryan moved to New York, where he undertook the MA cum laude & Master in Sacred Theology programmes at the General Theological Seminary. He served as Assistant Priest of St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue.

Ryan moved to Edinburgh in January 2021 and is currently completing his PhD in Practical Theology and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh School of Divinity. Ryan became the Locum Priest at Christ Church Morningside during the Interregnum (part-time) whilst studying full-time.

Kat Whigham - Assistant Organist

(front row, second from right)
Ross has been involved with sacred music since the age of six, when he began taking piano and singing lessons. He first played the organ in 2012 and, three years later, gave a solo recital during the Fringe.

Ross gained a BA (Hons) Music from the University of York, during which time he chaired the University Brass Band and also studied Baroque viola performance.

Ross has a great love for Anglican music in particular, and enjoys directing concerts which bring instrumentalists and singers together.
Kat has been involved in music from a young age, starting with the brass band culture of the Scottish Borders, and playing any instrument available. Once Kat took up the organ at 16, it became clear this was meant to be.

After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a BMus (Hons), Kat joined the choir at Christ Church and became Assistant Organist.
