Designed by renowned Edinburgh architect Hippolyte Blanc, whose other notable commissions include the Churchill Theatre (formerly the Morningside Free Church), Christ Church was completed in 1876.
As a venue, Christ Church holds an audience of 244 (based on six persons in each of the 34 Victorian pews and 40 persons in our new moveable seating).
Available for concerts, recitals, readings, "an audience with..." events, recording sessions, and more, Christ Church is an affordable option for your events. Our location on Holy Corner at the top of Morningside Road means that there is plenty on-street parking (free after 6pm weekdays, after 1.30pm on Saturday, and all day Sunday), plus bus services 11, 15 16, 23, 36, 45, and 101 stop at our door.
Level access to the church is available to the left of the church via our ramp door. Wheelchairs are easily accommodated in front of the pews. The church is kitted out hearing loop for those who wish to use this facility.
In summer 2024 we installed a dais (platform) at the front of church, and in November 2024 the fixed choir stalls were replaced with moveable furniture, giving us maximum performance flexibility for your events. We also commissioned four rectangular 1.7m x 1.1m risers, which can be arranged in a variety of ways: for "collegiate" style choir staging in conjunction with our moveable stalls; as concert style staging; or as a larger 3.4m x 2.2m stage for recitals, talks, and interviews.
In February 2025 we installed a new sound system, incorporating state-of-the-art Bose column speakers. Two headset mics and a handheld mic are available to use for all church hirers.
The organ, built in 1878 by Peter Conacher of Huddersfield, a Bechstein baby grand piano, and a Yamaha P-140 electric piano are all available for concerts and recitals.
